Civil War Veterans Grave Restoration Project

Sept. 23rd at 9:00 am-1:00 pm: Evergreen Cemetery in Manitowoc

On Saturday September 23, 2023, the Civil War Veterans Grave Restoration Project will be restoring gravestones of Civil War Veterans that are buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Manitowoc.  Since the project started in 2021 volunteers have restored over 100 of the 230 Civil War veterans’ gravestones in Evergreen Cemetery.  Many Civil War gravestones have never been cleaned and are difficult to read.  Who is this person and what is their story ?   Restoring these gravestones is a way to show respect to those who served to preserve our rights and our freedoms.  It is a way to say thank you to the veterans for risking their lives for us.

Volunteers from the community and local organizations, including the MCGS, will be restoring Civil War gravestones starting at 9:00 am.  Project Coordinator Daniel Reinke encourages anyone interested in helping with the project to attend this event.  This event is open to the public and families are welcome. Come out and help restore gravestones or just stop by and talk with the volunteers.   Coffee, water, and snacks will be provided for volunteers.  There is no need to bring cleaning materials, as buckets, brushes, soap, and water will be provided.
